Quad Serie 3

Quad Serie 4

Quad Serie 6

QUAD FM3 is designed for:

QUAD 303 and Quad 33
QUAD 33 is the system’s FM receiver.

Quad’s first FM receiver with transistors. The receiver contains a stereo decoder and is designed with ceramic filters and dual gate Mos FET transistors in the tuner, to achieve a very high selectivity and sensitivity.

Quad has another FM receiver in this design, It is an earlier model with tubes. It is quite rare.

QUAD 33 is designed for:

QUAD 303 and Quad FM3
QUAD 33 is the control unit of the system. On this, the signals from the connected devices such as tuner, gramophone, CD player and tape recorder are selected and regulated and via the power amplifier QUAD 303 or Quad 405 the signal is transferred to the speakers.
FILTERS
The filter is important to have in connection with a quality amplifier system and good speakers.
It removes (or reduces) surface noise, tracking distortion from vinyl records and similar imperfections in the upper frequency ranges of recordings or radio broadcasts. QUAD’s filter system fulfills this purpose without breaking unnecessarily into the harmonic range, which is so important for realistic reproduction.

QUAD 303 is designed for:

QUAD 33 and Quad FM3
QUAD 303 is Quad’s first amplifier designed with transistors.
The Quad 303 in particular is one of Quad’s most legendary amplifiers.
The Quad 303 is an amplifier with a sound reproduction that can be described as truly transparent and nuanced and with an impressive stereo sound image.

Peter Walker – owner and founder of Quad The Acoustical Manufacturing Company Ltd. – arranged an A/B test with the Quad 303 and selected tube amplifiers. Trained enthusiasts could not identify the Quad 303 (the transistor sound) in this test.
This means that the Quad 303 is the quality amplifier that gives the listener a correct sound image without coloring or otherwise changing the original sound.
The Quad 303 has been used by radio companies and record companies as a reference amplifier over a very long period.

QUAD FM4 is designed for:

Quad 34 or Quad 44 and Quad 405
Quad FM4 is the system’s FM receiver.
This design is with digital display and digital control of the tuner. The most used FM stations can be stored in the memory.
It is a really nice little tuner with a really good sound quality that fits the Quad products.

QUAD 34 is designed for:

Quad FM4 and Quad 405
Quad 34 is the control unit of the system.
On this, the signals from the connected devices such as tuner, gramophone, CD player and tape recorder are selected and regulated and via the power amplifier QUAD 405 or 405-2 the signal is transferred to the speakers.

QUAD 44 is designed for:

The Quad 44 is also the control unit for the Quad 4 system, but significantly more flexible than the Quad 34.
The Quad 44 has a modular structure and it is possible to optimize input needs and connections completely to the user’s requirements. For example you can install several RIAA modules – RIAA module with moving coil input and RIAA module with moving magnet input together with CD input and RADIO input. There is a total of 5 entrances possible.

FILTERS
Quad’s filter design is further optimized in both Quad 34 and Quad 44 (see more under Quad 33).

QUAD 405 is designed for:

Quad FM4 and Quad 34 or Quad 44
Quad 405 are the system’s Power door amplifiers.
There are 2 versions of the Quad 405. The first is called the Quad 405 and is the original. Later, the name was changed to Quad 405-2 to show that this version contained a lot of design changes for circuitry and sound quality.
There are quite a few versions of the Quad 405.
Mechanically, there are many market-dependent versions and during the production period a number of print changes were designed for the Quad 405.
But – overall, this amplifier is an absolutely fantastic construction with a truly unique Quad sound and it applies to all versions of the Qaud 405.

QUAD 66 FM is designed for:

Quad 66 and Quad 606
Quad 66 FM is the system’s FM receiver.
This design is with digital display and digital control of the tuner. The most used FM stations can be stored in the memory.

QUAD 66 is designed for:

QUAD 606 and Quad FM66
The QUAD 66 is the system’s control unit. On this, the signals from the connected devices such as tuner, gramophone, CD player and tape recorder are selected and regulated and the signal is transferred to the speakers via the power amplifier QUAD 606.

Quad has designed a remote control for this series.
As can be seen from the picture, the design of this particular remote control is very special.
Quad has now taken the step fully and has gone for digital design solutions still with a Quad touch in my opinion.

QUAD 606 is designed for:

Quad 66 FM, Quad 66 and Quad 66CD4
Quad 606 is the system’s Power amplifier.
There are 2 versions of the Quad 606. Both with the designation Quad 606. The case is different and the silk-screen printing of the logo is different. The cabinet of the latest version has beveled edges at the top.
The design of the Quad 606 is based on the circuit of the legendary Quad 405, but the amplifier can deliver more power. The sound is of course just as fantastic as for the Quaf 405.
The Quad 606 can deliver 140 watts per channel.

A little about Classic Audio

Dick Andersson

Owner of Classic Audio

Why renovate a classic Quad product that can play?

Any electronic product naturally ages, which means the sound quality deteriorates over time. It happens very slowly and in fact it usually happens so slowly that the owner does not notice it.
The reason is that some of the electronic components age, change value and specifications.
It is especially capacitors / electrolytes that slowly dry out and thereby change value and completely lose their function.
It can also happen that an electrolyte actually ‘leaks’ and thereby leaks some of the aggressive liquid it contains.
See an example on this page.

Other component aging issues.
Resistors can change value and/or start making noise. Transistors and integrated circuits typically acquire noise and distortion errors as they age.
Finally, there is a stability problem for all output amplifiers or power amplifiers. A power amplifier has to ‘get rid of a lot of heat’, and manufacturers have ensured that this can be done by fitting the very heat-emitting and cooling-demanding power transistors with a compound that provides a very good and efficient heat transfer to the heat sinks. Aging over time causes this compound to dry out and become ineffective for the transistors. This means that the transistors get way too hot, reach a temperature that is much higher than was intended.
It is solved by removing all power transistors and giving the transistors new compound or by switching to the expensive isolation discs, it replaces both isolation and compound. Thereby the amplifier can play safely for the next several years.

The Classic Audio concept:

A totally refurbished product means that the product has been brought to meet the same specifications as originally and appears visually as a new product.
The cabinet has been completely refurbished and without defects and appears really as it did when the product was brand new from Quad. I achieve this by using flawless parts from other Quad products for the renovation or by a gentle actual renovation that e.g. may mean repainting the cabinet, of course in the original colour.
You can hear how good the sound quality is, you can really hear a very surprising sound quality even compared to quality products sold today. It is actually the case that the sound quality – dynamics and transparency you actually achieve for e.g. Quad 405 totally refurbished can be compared to products that today cost at least DKK 25,000.

A totally refurbished product plays in terms of quality exactly like the original product, i.e. the real and original Quad sound.

A large number of components have been replaced, so that the sound quality is on par with good products produced today. Safety components and other components that have an influence on the lifespan are replaced, so that you can expect to use and enjoy the products for the next several years.

Classic Audio offers the opportunity to assess the result of the renovation in 2 ways.
A certificate is drawn up containing individual measurement results for the refurbished product in relation to DIN 45500 and in relation to Quad’s original specifications for the product.

A summary of the concept of total renovation of a Quad product:

  • The cabinet appears as new
  • A significant number of electrical components have been replaced
  • The product is calibrated and adjusted according to Quad’s regulations
  • A classic product that has been completely refurbished and tested for more than 500 hours before delivery
  • A product that meets original factory specifications or better.
  • Classic Audio Certificate – measure and test results for the product
  • Instructions for use – quality scanned copy of the original instructions for use
  • Diagram – quality scanned copy of the original Quad diagram in the correct version

You will receive information during the process so that you can follow the product’s path to final certification.
A personal website will be created for you, where you can follow the certification of your particular product.

NOTE
If an amplifier is more than 15 years old, the first changes have taken place!
A total renovation at Classic Audio means that the Quad 405 achieves data that when the product was new and most importantly, sounds like a QUAD 405.

Your classic Quad products

Classic Audio performs exactly the same process and upgrade for the Quad products that are totally refurbished for customers.

Aging – Components

The aging problem – where an electrolyte ages and leaks a very aggressive liquid, happens to Quad products.
It is especially Quad 34 – Quad 44 – Quad FM4 and Quad 405
As can be seen from the pictures, it is very critical, as the printed circuit boards are destroyed by the liquid, if a thorough renovation of the product is not carried out.
In the picture, this Quad 34 is very much included on the print – print webs are attacked and will probably wear through with instability as a result.

If you have one of the above Quad products, it is a really good idea to get something done as soon as possible. The products are now at the age where the problem is about to happen, and it is not necessarily too late.

Upgrade

If you buy a Quad product from Classic Audio, it is upgraded!
An upgrade that is carried out with consideration to preserve the originality of the Quad to the greatest extent possible.
The general upgrade carried out for all renovations at Classic Audio is a replacement of all electrolytic capacitors for special “Audio Grade” types. It is an upgrade where electrolytes are replaced with this more expensive but significantly better capacitor. At the same time, capacitors with a somewhat higher capacity and limit voltage are chosen where the construction allows.
It has an impact on the sound quality, whereby you achieve a significant improvement in transparency, stereo image (sound stage) and dynamics.
Power supplies are also upgraded to “Audio Grade” types, and especially here are replaced with the highest capacity the construction allows. This will mean a much more stable supply, which gives improved results for the bass area and dynamics area of the product. It’s something you can hear!

On the power amplifiers, the original Quad plug connections are replaced with new gold-plated quality plugs and gold-plated phono connectors are installed.

Quality

In connection with a total renovation of Quad products, it is essential that the products are reviewed and that the original safety conditions are in order.
It is e.g. the factory protection around the mains voltage main switch, wires, fuses. This is the state of the safety components fitted from the factory. If any of these original safety designs and – or components are not in order, the problem is rectified.
The components Classic Audio uses in connection with a total renovation and upgrade are quality components with a quality level and a lifetime that is in the best part of what the market can deliver.
